What to Get at a Korean Convenience Store

We made a post before about the multiple convenience stores in Korea. If you’ve gone to one, you must have realized that there are so many types of food and drinks in one store. Convenience stores worldwide have turned into a place that is a part of everyday life for most people. If you want something cheap and quick to eat, then everyone practically thinks of going there first.

The experience of walking into a Korean convenience store is very exhilarating. There are plenty of globally popular products varying from Gatorade to Pringles, and yet there are over a hundred more Korean products surrounding them.

It can be a hassle navigating around these stores, so we’ll help guide you in picking out the best snack, meal, drinks, etc. that are common to get in Korea.

Samgak Kimbap (삼각김밥)

Samgak Kimbap are Triangular Rice Balls (not exactly balls). They are the most basic of basic meals/snacks that you can get in Korean convenience stores. These little three-edged rice snacks require no utensils to eat. Just peel according to the instructions on the wrapper and use it to eat. Some common flavors include tuna mayo (참치마요), Jeonju bibimbap (전주비빔밥), and Spicy stir-fried chicken (닭갈비).

Banana Milk (바나나우유)

Korea is probably the only known country that actually makes so many banana-flavored snacks and drinks. But out of all of them, banana milk is the most popular. This creamy and sugary banana milk will have you coming back to the store for more. There are other flavored milk as well, so don’t worry if you dislike banana flavors.

Shin Ramyeon (신라면)

Shin Ramyeon is the most iconic noodles sold in Korea. It is known as South Korea’s most popular instant noodle and it’s flavorful with a slight spiciness is most likely the main reason why it attracts so many noodle lovers. Koreans also use a lot of soup-based dishes for hangover cures and Shin Ramyeon definitely has a big enough impact to wake you straight up.

Buldak Fried Noodles (불닭볶음면)

If you love noodles and spicy hot food, then this is the meal for you. For quite a while now, Buldak noodles have been famous for its super spiciness. It’ll literally make 9 out of 10 people crying and their faces red from it being too hot. There have been different variations of these Buldak noodles. Give those a try if you want a break from all the spiciness.

Doshirak (도시락)

These are basically lunch box sets and there is a variety of them depending on the convenience store. They usually go for 4,000 to 5,000 won (approximately 4 to 5 dollars) and they’re pretty popular since it’s the next best thing to a home-cooked meal. Some of the common ones are bulgogi (불고기), or marinated pork or beef, hamburger steak, and donkatsu (돈까스), or fried pork cutlet. The boxes are all made of plastic so you can warm the food with the store’s microwave.

Chocopie (초코파이)

This is a snack cake that is basically Korean-style s’mores. It consists of two layers of cake with marshmallow filling in the middle and the whole thing is covered in a thin layer of chocolate. If you want a chocolatey dessert, then this is something you absolutely must get.

This list is only a small portion of what one convenience store sells and each convenience store brand offers their own unique products. So make sure to try other food or drinks too because they might be more to your taste.
